Sea Marks
by Gardner McKay
Directed by John Barrett
February 21-March 8, 2025
Two people who are, as they say, from completely different worlds: he is a fisherman on a remote island off the Irish Coast; she works in a publishing house in metropolitan Liverpool. She’s divorced; his village is so sparsely inhabited that he has, in his words, “never courted.” In his veins run the simple rhythms of the sea; her head is filled with the hustle and bustle of the city. By chance they meet. She is entranced by the simple, honest poetry in his talk of the sea, and his life on it; he thinks she is the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen, and comes to know the beauty of her soul. Gradually, their attraction deepens into a warm and rich love, but can these two so very different lives be melded into one life together? Sea Marks is a richly romantic, and undeniably real journey along the path to love. There is tenderness and pain, wonder and surprises, loss and gain – a play for the she and the he – and the we - in each of us.
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder
Music by Steven Lutvak
Lyrics and Book by Steven Lutvak and Robert L. Freedman
Directed by Katie Swimm
May 2 - 17, 2025
Our musical this season is based on the same novel as the classic 1949 Alec Guinness comedy Kind Hearts & Coronets, in which the son of a disinherited woman discovers that he is in line for a title and an estate. Which would be great news, except for the inconvenience of there being seven others ahead of him in line, plus the current title-holder. So, how does one get revenge for one’s poorly-treated mother? Opportunistically, of course. One cousin at a time. It’s an amusing story, and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder was a hit on Broadway, winning multiple Tony, Drama Desk & Outer Critics Circle Awards. The musical opens with our “hero,” Monty, the current Earl of Highhurst, penning his memoirs in prison. It’s not that he’s a wholly reprehensible sort, willing to do anything to attain his goals. But okay, he does appear to have some moral lapses from time to time… to time. In the end, Monty proves that you can get what you want. But do you always still want what you ultimately get?
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
by William Shakespeare
Directed by Zach Best
July 18 - August 2, 2025
“The course of true love never did run smooth.” So says Lysander in the opening scene of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He and the other young lovers, along with a group of mischievous fairies, a troupe of amateur actors, and a Duke and Queen, cross paths in the forest where nothing goes as planned. Everyone will relate to (and delight in) the pursuit of young love, the complicated relationship between a somewhat overbearing parent and a child coming of age, the challenge of settling the boundaries of a new marriage, rifts in friendships, and perhaps even the excitement of rehearsing a play! Midsummer follows four separate groups of characters and therefore four different plots, marvelously interwoven, as all of the characters tumble over each other during one magical, zany night in the wood. There is never a dull moment for the characters or the audience. Where else can you find love, revenge, trickery, magic, a donkey head, and amateur theatrics all in the same play?!
